Program Overview

Our RN to BS in Nursing curriculum is designed to help you:

  • Improve patient outcomes. For every 10 percent increase in the number of nurses with BS degrees, hospitals see a 4 percent decrease in the risk of death.
  • Enhance your skill set. A BS education improves your skills in health promotion, cultural competence, information technology and holistic nursing intervention.
  • Expand your career opportunities. Leadership training prepares you for greater responsibility and authority within your clinical setting.
  • Focus on the needs of vulnerable populations. Our program emphasizes advocacy for rural healthcare and other groups with greater healthcare needs.

Program Format and Location

Starting a degree program can be daunting, particularly when you are already working in the field, and have a family and need to meet life’s daily obligations.

At The College of St. Scholastica, we’ve designed a rigorous, yet flexible, online Bachelor of Science degree program with a major in Nursing. Our online advisors work closely with students to create an individualized program plan that builds upon each student’s previous education and professional experience.

This program is delivered 100% online, allowing students to earn a degree from anywhere while collaborating with peers and completing assignments on an individualized schedule. And if you need to take a semester off, our advisors will provide scheduling options to keep you on track for graduation.

What is the Difference Between a BS and a BSN?

A BS is a degree offered by the College as a whole. It offers bachelor’s degrees in a variety of majors, but each program is governed by the school as a whole. In most cases the faculty/administrator in each department has a title such as “director” or “chair.” A “dean” is then over multiple departments.

A BSN is offered by a professional school that is a separate entity unto itself. If the nursing program is part of a larger university, there will be connections between the larger school and the School of Health Professions, but the School of Health Professions will have its own “dean” and more political independence.

Program Length

Because our program is tailored to fit your previous education and the needs of your personal life, the length of the program can vary. Most nurses complete the program in two to four semesters.

Learning Outcomes

The RN to BS Online Nursing Program has been designed to build on your knowledge as a registered nurse. Through this program, you will realize central concepts and broaden your knowledge base through a curriculum that is unique from the program taught at the associate-degree level.

The program is designed to achieve the following learning outcomes:

  • Synthesize knowledge from nursing, the arts and sciences and the Benedictine values in the holistic practice of professional nursing.
  • Demonstrate values and behaviors consistent with professional nursing standards.
  • Demonstrate competence in utilizing patient care technologies and information system technologies in dynamic healthcare environments.
  • Integrate effective inter-professional collaboration into practice to enhance the health of all patients, including diverse and vulnerable populations.
  • Utilize knowledge of healthcare policy and evidence-based nursing to advocate for the quality and safety of patient care.

Graduation Requirements

128-semester credits are required for graduation. The credits may be gained in a number of ways:

  • Transfer credits from a previous four-year college/university or community college
  • CLEP or challenge exams
  • Prior learning — submit proof of unrestricted RN license
  • Independent study
  • Taking courses
