Bachelor of Science Biology

St. Scholastica’s Biology program will help you unlock a fascinating world, where you’ll deepen your understanding of the scientific process. Along the way, you’ll develop your critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and quantitative reasoning skills. These abilities will prepare you for a biology profession or graduate studies.

As a Biology major at St. Scholastica, you’ll explore the vast areas of biology, including genetics, ecology, human biology, and evolution. You’ll learn how cells, molecules, and biochemistry work together in all living things, and gain a new appreciation for the beauty and complexity of the natural world.

In our program, learning goes beyond the classroom. You’ll do research in the classroom and take part in activities in the community. These experiences are built into your journey, allowing you to apply what you’re learning in meaningful, hands-on ways.

Research and Internships

The Biology program emphasizes hands-on learning and research opportunities. During your studies, you’ll have the chance to take at least two courses that allow you to apply your knowledge in real-world settings.

Possible on- and off-campus experiences include:

Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) developed in partnership through the Tiny Earth or HHMI’s Science Education Alliance
Internships at several sites, including the DNR, Hartley Nature Center, the Great Lakes Aquarium, Natural Resources Research Institute (NRRI), and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Mid-Continent Ecology Lab
Mayo Summer Lab Science Program and research experience
On-campus summer research project mentored by a faculty member
National summer research programs sponsored by the National Science Foundation

Career Outlook

Graduates of the biology program have gone on to positions in the public, private, and tribal sectors in various healthcare, biomedical, biotechnology, ecological, and conservation professions. Others have continued their education in medical training (MD, PA, OT, PT, dental, veterinarian, chiropractic, pharmacy), or pursued graduate degrees in fields ranging from public health to molecular genetics and genomics, microbiology, immunology, behavior, and ecology.
