When St. Scholastica launched the nation’s first bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management (HIM) in 1935, the field was known as medical records. As healthcare technology and health informatics have advanced, St. Scholastica has remained a leader — offering the first bachelor’s distance program in 1981 and the first online AHIMA-approved master’s degree in Health Information Management in the field (2001). Today, our CAHIIM-accredited Health Informatics and Information Management (HIIM) programs continue to prepare students to lead in a rapidly evolving healthcare industry.

The reporting period for these outcomes is Aug. 1, 2023-July 31, 2024.

  • 92% retention rate overall for BS in HIIM students
  • 90% of BS in HIIM graduates were employed full-time within 1 year of graduation*
  • 100% of employers responding to the BS in HIIM program employer survey stated they would consider hiring a St. Scholastica graduate in the future
  • 100% of professional practice experience mentors feel graduates will meet employer expectations
  • 100% of those who applied to graduate school were accepted

*For the graduate data, inquiries are sent via a graduate survey and/or LinkedIn to all graduates 1 year after a student confers their degree. During the reporting period, there were 14 graduates contacted; 10 of which responded. Of those, 9 were employed full-time within one year of graduation.

Experiential Learning

Professional practice experience opportunities

  • Students in the HIIM program participate in professional practice opportunities — taking them out of the classroom and into the healthcare workforce
  • The College coordinates Professional Practice Experiences for students based on the student’s preferences related to setting and geographic location
  • St. Scholastica students are connected to dozens of possible clinical sites. Students have completed Professional Practice Experiences in such locations as Seattle, Honolulu, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Tampa, Washington, D.C., and San Francisco in addition to Minnesota hospitals.

Career Outlook

Through a flexible format and a focus on real-world application, the Health Informatics and Information Management (HIIM) program prepares you for leadership roles in health information management and health informatics across a variety of healthcare settings.

Examples of jobs in the HIIM industry are director of revenue services, data analyst, quality partner, privacy and security coordinator, clinical informatics analyst and physician educator.

Additionally, the healthcare industry is booming and the use of Electronic Health Record (EHR) software nationwide has increased the need for qualified HIM professionals. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a 29% growth rate over the next decade for HIM and related careers.

Whether you want to work in coding and revenue cycle, informatics, data analytics or information governance the national professional organization AHIMA has a pathway designed for you. Salary varies by geography and title, but those with the most credentials tend to earn higher wages.

Future Education Model

The Bachelor of Science in Health Informatics and Information Management program at The College of Saint Scholastica has been selected as a Future Education Model demonstration program by The Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Health Information Management (CAHIIM). It is one of a select group of programs acting as early adopters of the latest enhanced curriculum requirements and accreditation standards. As an early adopter, the program will showcase innovative approaches to HIM education; promote experiential learning through student engagement in project work and authentic, real-life experiences; and continue to enhance the program to support student success.

Application Deadlines

On-campus Undergraduate Programs

St. Scholastica accepts applications for fall semester through the end of August. The application is free and deposits for admission are fully refundable until May 1.

Bachelor’s Degree Completion Programs

Most of our hybrid and 100% online programs operate on a rolling admission basis – allowing you to apply anytime. Once your application and other necessary documents are received, we will forward them to the appropriate department for review.

Eligibility

New Student
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 for entrance into the college
  • Cumulative GPA of at least 2.7 for entrance into the program

Note: Meeting minimum entrance requirements does not guarantee admission.

Returning Students

A returning student is a student who was admitted and enrolled in a program at St. Scholastica but has been absent from the program for at least three continuous semesters, including summer. To return to the same program at St. Scholastica, a returning student must be in good academic standing and must apply for readmission to the College.
