The College of St. Scholastica

As medicine today becomes increasingly complex, with a growing reliance on high-tech, sophisticated tests and procedures, it’s easy for bedside manner to get lost somewhere along the way. Health humanities is a fast-growing, interdisciplinary field that’s rising up in response to these trends.

St. Scholastica health humanities students are immersed the study of human dignity, values and health care ethics. These tenets are central to providing humane, dignified care. This program combines health care with the humanities to teach students about the human condition, human suffering and healing, and human well-being and flourishing.

Graduates of St. Scholastica’s health humanities program will come away with the ability to see patients as complex, whole persons. They’ll understand humanistic perspectives, human values, and their health applications.

This program has five core courses:

  • Health Humanities Foundations
  • Health, Happiness and Human Well-Being
  • Trauma and Recovery: Medicine and Literature
  • Healthcare Across Cultures / Health for All: A Global Perspective
  • Health Humanities Capstone Seminar

Majors will take four additional courses.

Students who successfully complete a Health Humanities major or minor, along with required science courses outside the program, will be exceptionally well-prepared for admission to medical school, to physician assistant programs and other health science graduate programs.
