The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is required to be eligible for most financial aid. The FAFSA must be completed each year. Students can now submit the FAFSA as early as October.
Student employment is a need-based program that students in our traditional undergraduate and graduate population may be eligible to participate in. Completion of the FAFSA is required and students will be made aware of eligibility on their financial aid award letter.
This program provides students who are awarded student employment an opportunity to work on campus or in select positions off campus in the community. St. Scholastica provides enough positions for about one-fourth of the traditional undergraduate student population under this program.
Instructions on how to proceed with the job search will be emailed to students to who qualify for student employment after all orientation sessions are complete. Being awarded student employment is not a guarantee of a job. Students with student employment eligibility are given priority for positions, provided they have the required qualifications.
A few examples of jobs available at St. Scholastica are: library staff, office assistants, food service workers, mailroom assistants, science lab assistants, teaching assistants and computer help desk staff.
All students offered a student employment position must complete federally required payroll forms, which include the Immigration and Naturalization I-9 form and a W-4 form, before they begin work at St. Scholastica. Students must bring original documentation of citizenship to the OneStop Student Services Office to complete these forms.
Incoming students generally work 10 hours per week to fulfill a typical award of $3,000 per year. The estimated award amount reflects potential earnings and is not a guarantee of work or earnings. Total earnings will vary depending on the rate of pay and number of hours worked. Current student employment wages begin at minimum wage; Food Service and Facilities wages are approximately sixty cents more per hour. Student employment earnings are subject to federal and state income taxes but are not subject to FICA tax as long as the student is enrolled at least half-time.
It is up to the student to decide how, or if, student employment earnings will be used to pay his or her bill. Students can apply up to 100 percent of their earnings to their St. Scholastica student accounts (optional). If divided, any remaining money will be direct deposited into the student's bank account.
The Financial Aid Office prepared this handbook to familiarize student employees and supervisors with the policies and procedures of the student employment program at The College of St. Scholastica. The student employment program brings students and College personnel together in a unique and mutually beneficial work environment. Employment is also intended to assist students in partially defraying educational costs and to develop desirable work attitudes and habits. The student employment program can also be helpful in securing full-time employment after graduation.
