The College of St. Scholastica

The College of St. Scholastica is hosting its Saints Adventure Camps, where participants of various ages and skill levels are invited to engage in the exhilarating sport of climbing while developing essential skills and overcoming personal fears. With an emphasis on safety and personal growth, this summer program offers a unique opportunity for children to experience outdoor adventure in a supportive environment.

Kevin TaralsethKevin Taralseth, assistant director of Outdoor Programs, addressed common concerns with WDIO: “Most people see this sport and think that’s going to be really stressful. Once you learn the systems, once you know all your equipment, you know how safe it can be. Statistically, the most dangerous thing we did today was drive here.”

The climbing camp is designed for children ranging from ages 6 to 14, providing a well-rounded experience that combines physical activity with art projects and nature-based adventures on the St. Scholastica main Duluth campus and in surrounding parks. Each week features thematic elements to promote active participation, creativity, and discovery.

Several participants shared their transformative experiences with WDIO. Kade Urness, age 12, noted, “I’m really afraid of looking down over stuff… Then I went down here and I looked up, and I was like, I can climb that.” Additionally, 12-year-old Niamh Bruns stated, “You don’t have to like it, but it’s just really fun. You feel really accomplished even after you just try something. Even if you don’t make it up, you still feel accomplished.”
