As we embrace our heritage and lean into our strengths to build the future, we are thrilled to introduce Brenda S. Kelly, PhD, as the fourteenth president of The College of St. Scholastica. While the presidential transition is a significant milestone in the College’s life, Dr. Kelly’s selection feels like a natural continuation of our story.

“The Board is delighted to welcome Dr. Kelly as the next president of St. Scholastica,” said Ed Crawford ’78, the chair of St. Scholastica’s Board of Trustees. “We look forward to working closely with Dr. Kelly in a spirit of partnership, openness, and shared purpose, as we continue to strengthen and advance the future of St. Scholastica.”

Dr. Kelly’s path is marked by deep scholarship and a genuine love of learning. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Creighton University and a PhD in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Washington.  Dr. Kelly joins us from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN, where she has served as provost and dean since 2018. Prior to joining the administrative ranks, she had spent 13 years as a faculty member and working in the lab, and mentoring students in biochemistry research.

A foundation of Benedictine values

“I am deeply honored to lead The College of St. Scholastica at such a pivotal time,” Dr. Kelly said. “With our Catholic Benedictine values as a foundation, I look forward to partnering with the St. Scholastica community to cultivate excellence and inspire one another to lead lives of learning and service.”

Dr. Kelly’s commitment to service is a natural extension of her Catholic faith. Whether she’s serving as a liturgical minister, volunteering for local schools and organizations, or hosting international exchange students, she lives out the hospitality and stewardship that define our Saints family.

An avid gardener, reader, and cook, she also partnered with colleagues to co-author the textbook “The Science of Cooking: Understanding the Biology and Chemistry Behind Food and Cooking,” blending her scientific expertise with a shared love for the culinary arts. For the “foodies” among us who may be curious, Dr. Kelly was the primary author of the chapters on cheese, breads, and sweets. This interest and expertise have allowed her to lead two food and wine tours in Italy and France.

As she joins the St. Scholastica and Duluth communities, Dr. Kelly is excited to learn more about the College’s history, including the close relationship with the Sisters of the Monastery. A runner and hiking enthusiast, she’s looking forward to exploring the trails of the area.

Saints, near and far, join us in welcoming Brenda S. Kelly, PhD, to The College of St. Scholastica!
