The College of St. Scholastica

On Tuesday, Sept. 2, The College of St. Scholastica welcomed its first-year students with a convocation ceremony to mark the beginning of the academic year. Held on the first day of classes, this tradition celebrated the College’s 114th anniversary and highlighted the value of the year, community.

Occupational Therapy’s Dr. Kaisa Syväoja emphasized the importance of community throughout the academic year in her address, encouraging students to fully engage in this value. “You’ll hear a lot about community this year from all corners of the college over the coming months,” she said. “We aren’t just talking about community. We are attempting to live by it, and we ask you to challenge yourselves to do the same.”

In addition to faculty and students, the ceremony included participation from the Sisters of the St. Scholastica Monastery and alumni, who joined virtually to support the new students. Local media outlet WDIO covered the event, capturing the spirit and excitement of the occasion.
