The St. Scholastica women’s basketball team has made headlines with a remarkable start to their season, boasting an overall record of 10-4 and a perfect 6-0 home record. This is the best start for the Saints since 1987, and Head Coach Jason Schmitz attributes much of this success to player recruitment and development over the years.

In a recent interview with Fox21 Online, Coach Schmitz shared, “Fortunately, a lot of luck in recruiting and some kids that bought in and fed in. Lead by our senior Jackie Johnson who has kind of been with me since the start essentially. Those next few classes have been great for us. Before we were so so young. Last year we didn’t play a single senior. But we’ve had a lot of kids play a lot of minutes in a Saints uniform, so that always helps. Like we started to get old together.”

Despite their strong start, Coach Schmitz remains focused on the bigger picture for the remainder of the season. “For us, even though we’ve started well, we know we still have a long way to go. We just have a general motivation to kind of get over the hump finally and make the MIAC playoffs, cause the last two years we finished 7th, just one spot out. So, we know we still got a lot of work to do.”
