The College of St. Scholastica

The College organized and hosted a ceremony in honor of the profession of social work on April 16. The event was in Benedictine Commons on the Duluth campus.

Duluth Mayor Emily Larson proclaimed April 16 Social Work Day in Duluth. She is an alumna of St. Scholastica’s undergraduate social work program, as well as of the University of Minnesota – Duluth’s graduate-level social work program.

She said her education, and the code of ethics of the social work profession, have been influential in her career.

“I learned about finding solutions in partnerships with others, identifying resources and then getting to the root cause of what is creating calamities in people’s lives … I’ve always been really proud of the education I received.”

The event also included remarks from Shelly Richardson, acting chair and assistant professor of social work at the College, student body president and undergraduate social work student Jason Chavez, graduate social work student Jack Lee, and Jim Amell, department head and associate professor of social work at UMD.

Master of ceremonies was Dr. Bruce Loppnow, dean of the College’s School of Health Sciences.
