A message regarding the death of Daunte Wright

Dear Colleagues,

Together we grieve the death of Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old Black man who was killed in Brooklyn Center on Sunday. We say his name, and offer our prayers to his family.

In the midst of the trial of Derek Chauvin, Mr. Wright’s death exacerbates the fear, outrage and anxiety experienced by many members of our community, especially our BIPOC friends and families. This trauma is immeasurable. And it is compounding.

As a Benedictine community, we lean into our Values of Hospitality, Community and Respect. We recognize the dignity and reverence in each holy being. These values also call on us to stand up for justice, peace and life for all people. They call on us to come together in prayer and purpose as we grapple with yet another loss.

We also acknowledge that the pandemic conditions present challenges in how we comfort one another and come together in community. Moving through the coming days, we encourage you to reach out to those in need, provide space and flexibility for processing and healing, and offer grace and a listening heart.
