Award-winning screenwriter to visit campus

Independent film screenwriter, producer, and performer Simon Barrett will give a talk titled "On Making Horror Movies" at 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 22 in room 249 of the Burns Wellness Commons on campus.

The presentation is free and open to the public.

The English Department at St. Scholastica is hosting Barrett, a screenwriter who is generating a lot of buzz in the independent film community. He writes genre-bending scripts for independent horror films such as "The Guest" (2014) and "You're Next" (2011), both made with director Adam Wingard.

The A.V. Club has called Barrett one of the "genre's freshest voices," and his screenplays have won awards from Fangoria, SXSW, and the Austin Fantastic Fest, the world's largest genre film festival.

In addition to writing and producing, Barrett has appeared in "Red Sands" (2009), "V/H/S" (2012), and "Contracted" (2013), among others. "The Woods," a new film directed by Wingard and based on Barrett's original screenplay, is currently in post-production and scheduled for release in 2016.
