College to host student learning expert at annual conference

A conference for educators hosted by St. Scholastica on June 21 will explore current and emerging trends in teaching and learning, with a focus on student assessment, student mental health, and the use of technology in the classroom.

St. Scholastica's annual 21st Century Teaching and Learning Conference is a daylong event where teachers can learn about research-based current strategies to engage 21st century learners, from K-12 to college students. Attendees will also network and share best practices.

Keynote speaker Thomas R. Guskey will give a presentation on "Improving Student Learning with Standards and Assessments." Guskey is a professor of educational psychology in the College of Education at the University of Kentucky. His presentation will focus on the question of whether schools should move away from letter grading toward more standards-based assessments.

"Guskey believes that more focused assessment standards will lead to improved results and outcomes in student learning," said Chery Takkunen Lucarelli, St. Scholastica associate professor of education. "That's really relevant to educators right now, as the debate surrounding assessment is a key issue in education today."

A graduate of the University of Chicago, Guskey served as director of research and development for Chicago Public Schools and was the first director of the Center for the Improvement of Teaching and Learning, a national research center. He is the author or editor of numerous books and book chapters, articles, and professional papers on educational measurement, evaluation, assessment, and grading.

Other conference focus areas will be technology in the classroom, and how teachers can help students who are having mental health difficulties. Subjects to be discussed include:

  • Communicating and collaborating with student websites
  • Using digital tools for student assessment
  • Traumatic stress on children and its impact on education
  • Using Google Apps Script to engage students in coding.

Continuing education credits are available for teachers and administrators. The conference cost is $99, which includes breakfast and lunch. The event runs from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information, visit css.edu/teachandlearn.
