The College of St. Scholastica

St. Scholastica’s psychology program features courses taught by award-winning faculty in every major sub-discipline of psychology. We place a strong emphasis on breadth and depth in your education. After being exposed to a wide range of psychology topics, you will work closely with faculty as you discover and develop your own areas of interest.

You will develop excellent critical thinking and writing skills essential for psychology professionals. You’ll also have the opportunity to take part in unique learning experiences. You may choose an elective course on the science of happiness that culminates with a trip to Denmark, conduct your own research project and present it at a regional conference, or participate in a field internship experience in a specific area of interest.

Program graduates are well-poised to find jobs immediately upon graduation or pursue graduate studies in counseling, clinical psychology or other healthcare fields.

Experiential Learning

Internships

Psychology majors at St. Scholastica can complete an internship during their junior or senior year to apply what they have learned in the classroom to the real world. Students completing this internship choose to work in a specific setting that interests them, including residential treatment programs, day treatment centers, the Benedictine Living Center, the county jail, federal prison or elementary schools.

Research

Students also have the option to dive deeper into a specific psychology topic by completing a faculty-mentored research project, which typically culminates in a conference presentation. Gaining this research experience is strongly suggested for students considering graduate or medical school.

Career Outlook

Many graduates of the psychology program enter the workplace immediately in a variety of fields. Others pursue graduate studies in counseling or clinical psychology, occupational or physical therapy programs or medicine. Psychology is a fast-growing career field; the projected growth rate for psychologists is 6% between 2022-2032 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
