The world of politics has profound impacts on our lives, but it can be difficult to understand how things get done in the hallowed halls of power. The study of political science will bring you new clarity about our political processes and show you how to get involved and make a difference.

The modern reality of politics is complicated. From labyrinthine legislature to campaigns of misinformation, the pillars of society are more obscured than ever. As a student of political science, the world around you becomes clearer as you deepen your understanding of important areas like political philosophy, global politics and international relations, peace and justice studies and issues of human rights. Along this journey, you will develop skills in critical thinking, leadership, research, analysis, communication and presentation.

St. Scholastica’s political science program, which offers a major and a minor, brings the College’s trademark liberal-arts approach to the discipline, broadening your experience and enriching your degree with a balanced curriculum. Research, write and debate the same pressing topics that are discussed every day in the press, courts and government buildings. Included in the program is the chance to participate in the Washington Semester Program at American University, where you can choose from more than 10 programs in areas such as American politics, foreign policy, or international environment and development.

Benedictine Scholarship

All new first-year applicants to St. Scholastica will be awarded either the Benedictine Scholarship or the Access Award, upon admission to the College.

Internships

Through the Washington Semester Program at American University, St. Scholastica students can study with policy experts in the nation’s capital, pursue an internship in a government agency or think tank, and undertake an in-depth policy research project
The St. Scholastica Pre-Law Program prepares students for law school through careful advising about course selection, legal internships and the law school application process. Develop your leadership skills through becoming involved in the Pre-Law Society and in student government organizations.
Through St. Scholastica’s partnership with Mitchell Hamline School of Law, well-prepared students can complete both their bachelor’s and law degrees in six years
Internships are available with state and local government agencies, NGOs, policy and advocacy organizations, and through many forms of public service.

Career Outlook

The study of political science prepares students for graduate studies as well as for a wide range of careers, including those in teaching, law, government, public service, public policy and administration, foreign and military service, business, electoral politics, international organizations, non-governmental organizations and the nonprofit sector, interest-group advocacy and journalism.
