A new kind of online learning: Massive Open Online Courses

The future of higher education is online. Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are classes that are offered online, free of charge. Students progress through the course material at their own pace, moving as quickly or slowly as necessary. Subject mastery is tested through four online quizzes.

Bringing our best educators to a wider audience

There will always be a place for powerful, effective teachers. MOOCs allow these talented educators to reach a wider audience. In this way, students will be able to learn from the best no matter where they live.

Differences between MOOCs and St. Scholastica Online Courses

  • MOOCs are pre-recorded courses with thousands of people enrolled in the same course, while CSS online classes sizes are small, averaging 20 to 25 students.
  • MOOC participants have little to no interaction with the instructor and provide no support to the students enrolled. CSS online classes have an instructor who facilitates the course, is available to answer questions, and grades the assignments in the course.
  • Student support services are not provided to MOOC participants. Student support services available to students enrolled in CSS online classes include library, tutoring, writing center and an academic advisor.
