Faculty and Advisory Board | Rural Healthcare MBA

Our Rural Healthcare Advisory Board is comprised of recognized leaders and innovators in rural healthcare. They are actively engaged with the program in identifying key needs and issues, guiding the content of our curriculum, and helping network students, faculty and practitioners for real-world applications. Our faculty are all scholar practitioners who have worked both in the field as well as taught for many years


Jeremy Armstrong, FACHEJeremy Armstrong, MHSA, FACHE, has been working in health care for the past 18 years.  His experience includes eight years of laboratory clinic work, five of these as an adjunct faculty at the University of Kansas School of Allied Health. Since 2003 Jeremy has worked as a healthcare executive and is the Chief Executive Officer at St. Luke Hospital & Living Center. He is the Kansas Regent for the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), board member of the Kansas Association of Health Care Executives, and the of the CAH State Network Council. He is an ACHE Fellow and in 2008 was awarded the ACHE Early Careerist Regent’s Award. Life outside of work is primarily spent with his wife and three children but he also enjoys photography, spending time outdoors, and cheering-on his KU Jayhawks.


Lynn Kalnbach, PhDLynn Kalnbach, PhD. Is Assistant Professor of Management in SB&T. Lynn is an Industrial/Organizational Psychologist with a Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-St. Louis, an M.S. from North Dakota State University, and a B.A. from The College of St. Scholastica. Dr. Kalnbach teaches Research Methods, Statistics, Social Psychology and Organizational Behavior. Her research interests focus on organizational issues including employee turnover and morale and organizational assessment, evaluation, and change.


Geoff Kaufmann,  MHA, FACHEGeoff Kaufmann, MHA, FACHE, is Chief Executive Officer of the North Central Region of the American Red Cross Blood Services. He has held senior-level operational and strategic planning positions with Stillwater Medical Group, Center for Diagnostic Imaging, Arizant Healthcare, Park Nicollet Health System, the University of Minnesota Hospital & Clinic and Hamilton KSA, a national healthcare consulting company. Kaufmann has more than 36 years experience in business development, strategic planning, marketing and physician relations. He serves as adjunct faculty at the University of Minnesota in the master’s program in Health Care Administration and the University of St. Thomas. Geoff received his undergraduate degree in biology from St. Olaf College and his master's in chemistry from the University of Chicago. Geoff teaches several courses for the University of Minnesota Program in Healthcare Management including Problem Solving; is a field work supervisor and faculty for summer clerkship.  He also teaches marketing and problem solving for the U of M ISP Program.  He teaches several course segments for the Health and Medical Affairs Program and the Physician Executive College at the University of St. Thomas.


Robert J. Hartl, M.A. Robert J. Hartl, M.A., is Associate Professor of Management and former of the Management Department at the College of St. Scholastica. He teaches organization development, process consultation, organizational behavior, and human resource management.  Bob is a well known consultant who is senior partner in Hartl Pearson Consulting, LLC., and his practice over the years emphasizes change initiatives in the health care industry. Before his role with CSS, Bob was Vice President of Human Resources & Organization Development for St. Mary’s/Duluth Clinic Health System (SMDC).  Before that he was the Chief Administrative Officer (City Administrator) for the city of Duluth, an organization he also had served for 15 years as Human Resources Manager. Bob is an avid runner and coach.


Terry Hill, MPATerry Hill, MPA is Director of the National Rural Health Resource Center in Duluth, Minn.. Terry serves as of the National Rural HIT Coalition and co-leads the HIT Regional Extension Center for Minnesota and North Dakota. He led the development of two rural health networks, the Community Health Information Collaborative (CHIC), a HRSA Office of Rural Health Rural Health Network grantee, and the Northern Lakes Health Consortium, a network of clinics, hospitals and long term care facilities in Northeastern Minn. He twice served as president of the National Cooperative of Health Networks (2008 and 2010), and has worked with rural health providers in more than 35 states. Terry is an adjunct professor at St. Scholastica and the University of Minnesota Duluth Medical School. He received his Master of Public Administration from Shippensburg University.


Tim Rice, M.A.Tim Rice, M.A., is President/CEO of Lakewood Health System, a rural, private nonprofit integrated healthcare system in Staples, Minn. Lakewood integrated with the physicians in 1997 and comprises a critical-access hospital, five area clinics and a full spectrum of senior services.  Tim has been President/CEO of Lakewood since 1980 and has more than 39 years of healthcare administration experience.  In 2002, Lakewood Health System received the Best Minnesota Workplace Award, in 2008 was selected for the Small Hospitals Top Leadership Team Award by HealthLeaders Media, in 2010 received the Minnesota Hospital Association Innovation of the Year in Patient Care Award for its work with medical home and is in the top 3 percent nationwide in actively engaged employees. In 2006, Tim was named Staples Citizen of the Year, and in 2009 Tim received the Minnesota Rural Health Hero Award.  Tim holds a B.A. and a Master's in Management from the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn.


Brock A. Slabach, MPH, FACHEBrock A. Slabach, MPH, FACHE, is Senior Vice President for Member Services, National Rural Health Association, Kansas City, Mo., a membership organization with more than 20,000 members nationwide. Slabach has more than 22 years of experience in the administration of rural hospitals. From 1987 through 2007, he was the administrator of the Field Memorial Community Hospital in Centreville, Miss. His experiences have led him to be a member of the NRHA Board of Trustees (2004-07); member of AHA’s Regional Policy Board (RPB) for Region 4 (2004-07); of the NRHA Hospital and Health Systems Constituency Group (2004-07); , National Rural Health Policy Issues Group for HHS’s Office of Rural Health Policy (ORHP) (2006-07); and the president of the Delta Rural Health Network (2004). He earned his Bachelor of Science from Oklahoma Baptist University and his Master of Public Health in Health Administration from the University of Oklahoma.


David X. Swenson PhD LP DAPBSDavid X. Swenson PhD LP DAPBS is professor of Management in SB&T, and coordinator of the Online MBA in Rural Health Administration. He received his Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1977. He has been an instructor at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, Associate Clinical Professor at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine-Duluth, and Clinical Director of a rural mental health center in Superior, Wis.  Most of his 40+ years in the field have been in health and human services, primarily serving the rural areas of Missouri and Northern Wisconsin and Minnesota as a consultant in organization development and forensic psychology. Swenson teaches a variety of courses in the School of Business and Technology, including IT Leadership, Crisis Management in Organizations, Team Management, Organization Development, and Marketing. His pastimes include blacksmithing, writing, gardening, and t’ai chi.


Randal Zimmermann, A.B.D., M.I.A.Randal Zimmermann, A.B.D., M.I.A., is Assistant Professor of Management and of the Graduate Program in SB&T. He has his Master's degree in International Administration from the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vt., and has completed all but his dissertation in the Comparative and International Development Education Ph.D. program at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.  Randy’s academic interests and expertise are in the areas of management education, international and cross-cultural training, higher education reform in post-communist states, and the role of the public sector in market-oriented societies.  From 1991 to 2004 he managed several USAID-funded business education development projects in Central and Eastern Europe and the Newly Independent States. Zimmermann also held executive and senior management positions in Washington, D.C., with two prominent international education associations during the 1980s.  His personal interests include vintage auto & motorcycle restoration, boating, and enjoying the outdoors with his wife and three boys.
