Nursing at St. Scholastica

Message from the Dean

Marty Witrak, Dean, School of NursingThis is an exciting time to be a student in any of our programs. Nurses are in great demand everywhere! A baccalaureate or master's degree prepares you for an amazing number of exciting career opportunities.

Why are nurses in such demand? The explosion of knowledge and opportunities are at an all time high. The science of health care has expanded phenomenally in the past five years. The economic changes in health care impact nursing in several ways. Patients are in the hospital for increasingly complex diagnostic and treatment procedures. These factors mean that more nurses are needed. More nurses are also needed to work with patients outside the hospital setting. Nurses have important work in schools, clinics, public health agencies and other settings to prevent illnesses before they occur or assist patients and families after a hospitalization. Nurses with master's degrees, such as nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists, have been demonstrated to provide high quality and cost-effective health care. These nurses are also in great demand.

Why get a degree at CSS? We have a long and illustrious reputation for excellence. We have access to hundreds of clinical sites, large and small, rural and urban, within hospitals and community centers. We have students in nursing, English, physical therapy, psychology, occupational therapy, social work, exercise physiology, management, health information management, and many other majors or graduate programs all learning together. The time is right to start or expand your nursing career. We hope you'll take a good look at what we're doing and consider CSS in your future.

Dean Marty Witrak earned a Ph.D. from Syracuse University, a M.S. from the University of Minnesota, and a B.S. from St. Olaf College, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.
