Women's Softball - vs. Fontbonne MO College
Errors plague Saints in loss to Fontbonne
Errors in the field, a pair of passed balls, and a steal of home on a double-steal doomed the Saints in their 5-2 loss to Fontbonne (Mo.) University Friday afternoon in St. Louis at the Midwest Region Invitational.
The Saints gave up two unearned runs in the top of the first, then another unearned run in the top of the second to fall behind the Griffins 3-0.
In the bottom of the fifth the Saints chipped into the lead with a run of their own but Fontbonne scored two -- one unearned, the other on the double-steal -- in the top of the sixth to extend their lead to 5-1.
But the Saints immediately answered in the bottom half of the inning. Dre Thomas led off with a single then, after an infield pop for out number one, scored all the way from first on a double by Erica Bond. Down 5-2 and desperate for another run, the Saints couldn't bring Bond around. They then went down in order in the bottom of the seventh in losing their first game at the Invitational.
Laura Heise (7-3) took the loss after allowing only 1 earned run while scattering 7 hits and collecting 14 strikeouts. The defense behind her had 3 costly errors and 2 passed balls that aided the Griffins.
The Griffins' Ashley Weaver cooled the Saints bats all game surrendering only 3 hits and 2 walks while registering 7 strikeouts. Thomas, Bond and Sara Kneisl had the only hits for St. Scholastica.
After day one at the Invitational, the Saints (9-5 overall) are 1-1 and will try to rebound on Saturday in the opener against Webster (Mo.) University.
