Women's Softball - vs. Washington MO University
Saints topple #7 Wash. U. (Mo.)

The 23rd-ranked Saints defeated the seventh-ranked Bears from Washington (Mo.) University 4-2 Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Midwest Regional Invitational in St. Louis, Mo. The St. Scholastica victory -- on Wash. U.'s home field -- snapped the Bears' 39-game regular season win streak.

The Saints (9-4) scored two runs in the top of the first as they capitalized on a leadoff walk of Kristi Erickson, a single by Laura Heise and a misplay in the field to load the bases. Kelly Cordie's RBI single to right field produced the first run of the game, and then Joann Juten pushed another across the plate on an RBI groundout to make the lead 2-0.

In the top of the fifth, Cordie doubled off the top of the center field wall scoring Erickson and Erica Bond to extend the Saints lead to 4-0 over the Bears.

Through her first five innings on the mound, Heise shut down the Bears offense allowing just two hits. Wash. U. finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with two runs but Heise closed the door after that. In seven innings, she allowed two runs on two hits, struck out five and walked two while improving her season record to 8-2.

Cordie finished the game with two hits, a walk and three RBI while Erickson was 1 for 3 with two runs for the Saints. Bond and Heise scored the other runs for St. Scholastica.

After a late afternoon game against Fontbonne at the Wash. U. field, the Saints resume play on Saturday at the same location, beginning with a 1pm matchup with Webster University then a rematch with Wash. U. at 3pm.
