Women's Softball - vs. Texas Lutheran University #2
Saints sweep Texas Lutheran
The Saints got back on the winning track Tuesday with a doubleheader sweep at Texas Lutheran University in Sequin, Texas.
An RBI single by Laura Heise scored Kelly Cordie in the 4th to give the Saints the only run they would need as they rolled to an 8-0 win.
After scoring another in the 5th, the Saints broke the game open in the 6th with 5 runs keyed by a pinch-hit single from Rilee Dawson to bring 2 runs around and then a single by Joann Juten to push 2 more across the plate.
Laura Heise (4-1) earned the win yielding just 2 hits and 1 walk while striking out 7.
In game two, the Saints found themselves down 4-0 entering the top of the 5th. A sacrifice fly by Cordie scored Sara Kneisl to finally get the Saints on the board. In the 6th, they erupted for 6 runs to grab the lead for the first time in the game.
Amy Jansen led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on an infield out. After Jody Yurczyk's single put runners at the corners, Kneisl lined a single to right that scored Jansen. Andrea Thomas followed with a single to load the bases and a passed ball then allowed Yurczyk to score and cut the lead down to 4-3.
With runners at second and third, Erica Bond singled to clear the bases and give the Saints the lead for the first time in the game. She stole second then scored on a Heise single for the Saints' final run in a big inning that put the Saints up 7-4.
Jansen (0-0) started the game and allowed 4 unearned runs on 4 hits in three innings of work. Heise (5-1) relieved her in the 4th and earned the win with four hitless innings.
The Saints (5-3) next travel to Trinity University in San Antonio on Wednesday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
