Jimmies upset top-seed Saints in Region III semi-final
Destiny, it seems, was on the Jamestown College bench as the Jimmies notched a 1-0 victory over the Saints in the Region III Final Four tournament.
St. Scholastica totalled 19 shots, 7 on goal, against the Jimmies while surrendering 6 shots and only 1 on goal to the #4 seed. Content with packing the defense in out front of their keeper and making the occasional, unsuccessful, rush upfield, the Jimmies effectively kept the deadly Saints offense from in close, and preventing any rebound shots.
It was that 1 shot on goal by Jamestown that undid the Saints, though, and sent the Jimmies to the Region III title game.
Late in the game on one of their few possessions in the Saints defensive end, Colleen Lubke from Jamestown sent a cross from deep in the right corner to a teammate in front of Saints keeper Kristin Lammi. With Lammi in position to make the easy stop, the Jamestown player missed which allowed the ball to travel all the way across the goal mouth, somehow missing every other player, to the back post where the most dangerous foot on the Jamestown roster found it. Alicia Wolfskill one-touched the ball, off the post, behind Lammi to give the outgunned Jimmies the 1-0 lead in the 77th minute.
Over the final 13 minutes the Saints substituted in every offensive foot on the bench but couldn't find the goal that would tie the game.
What made the loss even more heartbreaking for the Saints was the fact that they had socred a goal within the first 4 minutes of the opening whistle, only to be called offsides on the play - the only offsides call of the entire game. As well, the Saints were unable to convert on 11 corner kick opportunities while yielding only 1 first-half corner to the Jimmies.
The loss ends the season for the Saints who will next year play at the NCAA Division III level, exiting the NAIA.
