Women's Basketball - vs. Northwestern College
Eagles too much for Saints
Northwestern knocked off the visiting Saints in women's basketball in Saturday afternoon action, 52-40. The loss moves the Saints closer to missing out on the UMAC post-season tournament. Their slim hopes involve a season-ending win at Northland on Tuesday night and a lot of help from others.
After a slow start from both teams, Northwestern scored first at the 18:00 mark of the first half and jumped on the Saints, making it 13-1 with 7:12 to play. The Saints lone point came from an Erin Niles free throw.
Two free throws by Jess Stenberg and a :30 timeout kicked the Saints into action as they scored 10 points in the final 5:22 of the half. Going into the intermission though, Northwestern led 18-13.
The Saints had another slow start going into the second half, which ultimately cost them the game. They did not score until a field goal by Latham with 10:11 remaining. Scholastica came within 9 with just under four minutes remaining, but the Eagles were too much for them.
Despite a career high and game high 17 by Stenberg, the Saints fell 40-52 on the road.
The loss was especially unfortunate for the Saints as they needed a win over Northwestern to keep their play-off hopes alive.
Northwestern was led by Julie Ross with 14 points and Hannah McEvoy and Heather Thompson, who each had 12.
