Women's Basketball - vs. Viterbo University
Saints fall in overtime to visiting V-Hawks In a game that was tied at halftime and at the end of regulation, the final score wasn't settled until Viterbo's Alyssa Kammel sank a pair of free throws with 5 seconds left and Jen Kne's running jumper at the buzzer bounced off the iron to preserve the 71-69 overtime triumph for the V-Hawks in today's game at the Reif Center at St. Scholastica.
Both teams opened with hot hands as Viterbo hit their first seven shots and the Saints their first six of eight. Remaining tight through the initial six minutes, the V-Hawks eventually broke out to a 12 point lead just past the midpoint of the first half.
The Saints then went on a 13-0 run to take a 30-29 lead with under four to play in the half. The teams entered the intermission knotted at 32.
The second half seemed to be going the Saints way as the home team broke out to, then held steady a 7 to 9 point lead throughout the opening 11 minutes. It was Viterbo's turn to whittle a lead down this time, though, finally tying the score for the sixth time at 53-53 with 5:22 to play.
Each team traded a pair of baskets over the final minutes, closing out the second half tied at 57.
In overtime, the Saints and V-Hawks traded the lead six times until the score was tied at 69-69 with 14 seconds to play. A defensive foul put Kammel on the line for Viterbo who sank both shots for the final two of her 17 points in the game.
Kne took the inbounds pass for the Saints after the free throws, drove the length of the floor down the right side and was able to get off a running jumper just before the horn sounded, but disappointingly watched it roll off the rim.
Kne led all scorers in the game with 18 points and had her first double-double of the season as she also grabbed 10 rebounds. Whitney Latham, who hit three 3-pointers, had 17 for the Saints. Also in double-figures for St. Scholastica was Sarah Klocke with 12 points and Erin Niles with 11.
