Women's Volleyball - vs. UMAC Conf.Tournament-Martin Luther College
Martin Luther eliminates Saints at UMAC Tournament St. Scholastica started off their opening round match against Martin Luther by winning game one 30-25. After that, however, the Knights reeled off three successive wins (30-27, 30-19, 30-27) to take the match, ending the Saints season.
Laura Lief was the match leader in assists with 55 and three Saints were in double-figures in kills -- Shawna Varichak (20, match co-leader), LeAnn Berscheit (17), and Ashley Hanson (13) -- but the Saints weren't able to topple the Knights, a team St. Scholastica beat 3-0 at home in the Reif earlier in the season.
Natalie Ristow led the Saints in digs with 20 but Martin Luther had four players in digs double-figures. The Saints were 'out-dug' 84-64 in the four-game match, and the Knights accumulated 13.0 blocks compared to the Saints' 6.0 which was also a factor in the loss.
Usually a strong statistic for the Saints, they were only able to tally 3 service aces for the match, a sign of the strong defensive stand the Knights put up. Diana Moody was the match leader in aces with two.
By no means were the Saints poor or sloppy on their own side of the court, only 1 serve receive error in the entire match for example, they simply ran into a Martin Luther team that played just a little better than the Saints at just the right time.
