Saints topple UMAC leader in volleyball


Hosting conference leading Bethany Lutheran College, St. Scholastica got the biggest win of their season so far, defeating the Vikings tonight at the Reif Center on campus, 3-1. With the win, St. Scholastica ups their conference mark to 6-2, the record that Bethany Lutheran now drops to.
Ashley Hanson and LeAnn Berscheit keyed the attack offensively, Hanson registering 16 kills with Berscheit adding 15. Laura Leif led the Saints in assists with 49 for the match, and Natalie Ristow was tops in digs with 11.
The Saints took the early lead in game one but fell behind mid way through, eventually losing by a 30-25 score.
Fortunes were reversed in game two as the Vikings broke out to a lead but it was the Saints that roared back this time, taking the game 30-24 to even things up.
St. Scholastica then powered through for the win in game three, 30-23, to take a 2-1 lead in the best of five match.
Game four was also a see-saw affair but it was the Saints that grabbed the lead late. They were one point away from closing out the match when the Vikings fought back to tie the score at 29. The determined Saints, on their home court, grabbed the next two points to finish out the game 31-29 and take the match.
