Johnson becomes career 3-point leader in win over Lumberjacks

Box Score

With four 3-pointers in tonight's 86-73 home victory over Northland College, junior Derek Johnson passed Mike Mamot to become the program's career leader in 3-point field goals made. In only 70 games, Johnson has made 172 3-pointers passing Mamot's 170 over his 98 game career.

The Lumberjacks came out pressing from the tip and rode their pressure defense to a lead throughout the opening 7 minutes of the game.

St. Scholastica gained their first lead at 13-12 but after that the lead changed hands 10 times along with four tie scores over the next 11 minutes.

With 1:06 in the half Johnson sank his third 3-pointer to give the Saints a 3 point margin, one that they would take into the intermission.

The Saints opened the second half with a 6-0 run that pushed their lead to 9 points. The Saints would never trail in the half and won going away, finishing Northland off with a 7-0 run to close out the game.

Johnson finished with a game-high 23 points followed by Andy Schmitz and Josh Gosar each with 11. Gosar's 5 rebounds in the game puts his career total at 493, five short of the 500 mark and only three behind Chris Rauschenfel's 5th place career total of 496.

William Maupins just missed the double-double by scoring 10 points and grabbing 9 rebounds. He finished the night by adding 6 assists, 3 blocks and a steal -- with only 2 turnovers in 35 minutes of action.

Tonight's victory moves the Saints' current win streak to 6 games, and pushes their home win streak to 7. Now 10-8 overall, they will retain the top spot in the UMAC with a 6-1 conference mark. Northland falls to 3-14 overall and 2-5 in the UMAC.
