Johnson leads Saints in win over Hamline
The Saints blew open a tight game shortly into the second half, extending a two point halftime lead into an 18 point home win in afternoon action at the Reif Center at St. Scholastica. The 77-59 win over the Pipers is the second win of the season for the Saints.
First half action saw nine lead changes between the two teams, the Saints taking the last lead into the intermission.
In the second the Saints started strong, scoring the initial seven points of the half to push the lead to nine before Hamline would score on a short jumper at the 14:36 mark.
Derek Johnson then led a 10-0 run by the Saints, scoring 8 of the 10 himself, to push the lead to 17. From that point on, the Pipers never got closer than 13.
Johnson led all players with 28 points, hitting 6 of 13 3-pointers and shooting a perfect 8-8 from the free throw line.
Three other players reached double-figures for St. Scholastica. Josh Gosar had 12 points and 4 rebounds, Robert Jackson added 11 points and 4 boards, and Scott Olson chipped in 10 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals in 16 minutes of action.
Defensively, the Saints held Hamline's top two scorers well below their season averages and allowed only one Piper to reach double-figures. Jon DeRock scored only 4 points in the game after averaging 13.7 in his first seven, and Tony Thrasher was held to 6 after entering the contest averaging 13.1 points per game. Kyle Foster had 14 for the visitors.
St. Scholastica held Hamline to under 37% shooting from the field and forced 22 turnovers by the Pipers.
