Saints fall to crosstown rival in nail biter

The Saints men's basketball teams bid for their first win of the season came up just short as they failed on two attempts in the closing seconds to defeat crosstown rival UW-Superior. A basket by Andrew Schmitz with :29 seconds remaining put the Saints up 61-60 but Superior's Tyler Hildebrandt hit a 15 foot baseline jumper with 8 seconds remaining to seal the victory. The Saints had two chances in the finals seconds but could not get a shot off.

The Saints (0-2) built a six point lead in the first half only to see Superior (2-0) fight back for a 28-27 half time lead. Again in the second half the Saints led most of the way and maintained another six point lead with 3:34 remaining. Superior went on a 7-0 run over the next minute and pulled ahead 60-59 on a Hildebrandt 3-pointer.

For Superior, Hildebrandt finished with 21 points and was named to the all-tournament team along with teammate and tournament MVP Leonard Cobb, who had 17 points and 7 rebounds. For the Saints, Derek Johnson had 18 points, Josh Gosar 13 and Robert Jackson added 12. Johnson was named to the all tournament team.

In Saturday's first game of the Wells-Fargo Shootout Nebraska -Wesleyan (2-0) defeated Martin Luther (0-2), 68-58.

Drew Kock of Martin Luther and Nebraska-Wesleyan's Joseph Easley and Marcus Minzel were also named to the all tournament team.
