Is Your Barcode Active?
Homepage > Academics > Library > Find Distance Services > Getting Started > Is Your Barcode Active?

Your CSS ID serves as your library card. Before you can use it to access databases from off-campus, your ID needs to be activated. This can be done in any of the following ways -

1. Stop by the Library's Circulation Desk with your ID. It only takes a minute.

2. Fill out the online form to activate your barcode.

3. Call the CSS Library at (218) 723-6140. Make sure you have your ID in hand.

4. Email the library at library@css.edu.

We need:
To activate your card we will need to know your name, your barcode number from the back of your ID (begins with 20116), and your CSS student number (B or V number).

IF YOUR ACTIVATED ID DOES NOT WORK it could be due to -

1). for regular use (interlibrary loan, checking books out): After you activate your ID initially, it is automatically activated each time you register for a new semester. Occasionally there is a "glitch" and this does not happen. In this case contact the Library (see above) and we will reactivate your ID.

2). for off-campus database access: The CSS Library uses a service called EZ Proxy to verify access to our off-campus databases. We send them a list of all active IDs every Monday. If you have just activated your ID it is possible that EZ Proxy has not been informed of it yet. Please contact the library to obtain our "generic" barcode number to use until your own becomes activated.

If your ID works at home but not at work ...
If you are successful accessing the databases from your home, but not from work, it could be that your workplace has a firewall. Ask your IT people to open port #2048 - #2248. If they will not, then either.....you will have to work from home or.....Use this interface: www.mnlink.org After you click "Search" you will be asked for your UserID which is your Library barcode, and your Password, which is your last name. We do not publicize this method because not all of our databases are available through it (CINAHL, WilsonWeb, and PsycINFO are not), and its interface is much cruder than that available through our regular Connect From Home interface.
