Image of Donna HofferTell us about the work you do: After graduating from The College of St. Scholastica, I worked in Social Security administration. Currently, I work as the director of Human Resources/Safety at the Cook Hospital and Nursing Home. In this position, I am responsible for all human resources functions for the hospital and nursing home system. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to: benefits, workers' compensation, hiring, policies and procedures, disciplinary action, contract negotiations, training, safety, electronic time and attendance system.

A source of pride in your life: My family has been very encouraging and a source of pride in my life. I met my husband, Bill, while in high school. We have three boys: Tim, 29; David, 25; and Patrick, 15. We have one granddaughter, Alexis, who is five. I have 11 siblings. My family has been very supportive of my educational aspirations.

Best St. Scholastica memories: I made several friends during my years at The College of St. Scholastica and am still in contact with those friends. I remember the long drive I had to make every other day to attend college. I quickly learned how to drive and study with flashcards while making the 220-mile round trip.

Significant influences: Mr. Hank Goodsky and Mr. Eugene Goodsky taught me and others cultural and spiritual ways for American Indian people. They also introduced me to the military and taught me how important it is to support those that serve. As a child, I remember them coming home on leave and giving us the military salute in full uniform. This instilled so much pride and honor in me that I joined the Auxiliary Club.

Something interesting about your life: My family and I have hosted several foreign exchange students from South America, Australia, Mexico and Denmark.

Other achievements: I have completed the coursework for a master's degree in management at The College of St. Scholastica. I attended the University of Minnesota to receive a licensure in Long-Term Care Administration. I've recently completed the Blandin Foundation's Community Leadership Program and now serve on the Bois Forte Reservation Workers' Compensation Appeals Board.

Further education: My goal to seek a higher education did not come until later in life. I had my first child at an early age, dropped out of school and lived on welfare. Realizing that education is very important, I went back to graduate from high school. After having my second son and hearing my mother's inspiring dreams of her education, I entered vocational college obtaining an administrative support degree. I went on to earn my associate of arts degree and my bachelor's degree. I am currently writing my thesis for my master's degree.

Philosophy: "You are blessed" are words that were spoken to me by my elders. No matter what others may say or think about you, the Great Spirit has blessed you because you are gifted. Always keep your chin up and continue to follow your dreams.

Impact of the Benedictine values: The College of St. Scholastica has a very warm, friendly atmosphere that promotes caring, sharing and learning. I will always remember the amazing experience I had developing my independence, vision and initiative.
