How does it work?
You can spend a semester in Washington, D.C. in a full-credit program offered through American University where you get to apply all the material you learn in textbooks to the real world. Upon successful completion of the Washington Semester Program, you earn 12-16 American University credits (depending on your program choices) that you transfer back to your home school.
Each semester, approximately 400 students, representing over one hundred and fifty colleges and universities around the nation, participate in one of our 12 unique programs.
No two weeks are the same during your Washington Semester experience! On any given day you'll race from your internship, to a meeting with high-level professionals with your class, to a session in the Senate, to the Library of Congress for research, to a free show at the Kennedy Center, to your class mock trial, to . . .
That's right, you'll become immersed in your field in every possible way. Your semester consists of three components:
Remember, the Washington Semester Program is about choice. For example, if you enroll in the Journalism Semester you may still intern in a Congressional Office or perhaps one of the Smithsonian Museums and even take an elective course in Economics or Statistics to fulfill a requirement for your degree. You decide what combination of experiences is best for your goals
What about tuition and other expenses?
Per St. Scholastica's agreement with The Washington Semester program, St. Scholastica students pay current St. Scholastica tuition directly to American University.

Where do I live?
You live on a satellite campus of American University designed specifically for Washington Semester students. Tenley Campus houses residence halls, classrooms, a dining facility, faculty offices, and administrative offices for the Washington Semester Program. Other amenities, such as a fitness room, study areas, reading room, computer lab, and playing field are also centrally located on Tenley Campus. It is also just steps away from the Metro, giving you easy access to your internship and seminar locations. The main campus is just a 10-15 minute walk up the road. A free shuttle bus runs a continuous loop between main campus, Tenley Campus, the Metro station.
As a Washington Semester Program participant, you are a member of the American University community and have access to all of the services and amenities offered by a major, modern university.
What is American University?
American University is located on an 84-acre residential campus in a quiet, beautiful neighborhood of upper-northwest D.C. Chartered by an Act of Congress in 1893, American University is a liberal arts school of approximately 5,000 undergraduate and 5,000 graduate students. American University is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. The faculty includes award-winning and internationally recognized scholars and consultants.
Who issues Washington Semester transcripts?
Your academic transcripts for the Washington Semester Program will be issued by American University.
How do I learn more or apply?
Interested St. Scholastica students must be nominated to The Washington Semester Program. Minimum requirements include a 3.0 grade point average. For more information on the nomination process contact:
