Welcome from the Department Chair
Welcome to the Department of Athletic Training at The College of St. Scholastica! Our first class of students is in progress and we are looking for students to begin our second class starting in June 2010.
I am proud to lead the newest program in the School of Health Sciences at St. Scholastica. Athletic Training is an Entry-Level Master of Science degree and a peer to other very high quality programs in the school. The academic rigor challenges any program in the country. In addition, attaining ARC First Responder status; becoming Graston certified; preparing for the CSCS, NASM-PES, and NASM-CES certifications; learning on cadavers; and learning to use electronic health records will provide you with distinct advantages over your peers at other institutions.
We also offer a MS in 5 (3 + 2) option for undergraduate or transfer students. A limited number of slots are available and admissions is very competitive. Students admitted on this basis would graduate with a BA in Health Sciences, Athletic Training Concentration after their senior year and complete the MS after their fifth year.
We are the only entry-level Master's program of its kind between Ohio and North Dakota. Upon completion of the program, you will need to successfully pass the national certification exam and become credentialed in whichever state you choose to practice. Our program will prepare you well for succeeding on both the certification exam and in your career.
Our facilities are top notch. We have a new 2,000 square feet athletic training clinical facility in Burns Wellness Commons as well as laboratories for Athletic Training, Cadaver Anatomy, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics/Motor Behavior, and patient assessment simulations. We currently have two faculty, a clinical staff of four, and adjunct (part-time) instructors for a few specialty courses. Finally, we have added thirteen external clinical placements and continue work on securing more.
We are currently pursuing accreditation by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). Our on-site visit will occur during our last semester of teaching courses the first time through (CAATE requirement) in Spring 2011. I welcome your interest and strongly encourage you to undertake more in-depth exploration. Please contact me at hstrough@css.edu or 218-723-6798 if you have any questions. We began reviewing applications on October 15th and will continue to admit students on a rolling basis until we have a full class. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Hal Strough, Ph.D., ATR, ATC
