"Informatics" refers to the application of computers to managing information. The growth of health care-related informatics as an academic discipline is a reflection of the rapid growth of sophisticated computer-based applications within the health care industry. "Healthcare Informatics is focused on the development of computer-based applications designed to support the entire spectrum of users of health care information," says Shirley Eichenwald, MBA, RHIA, CPHIMS, and The ATHENS Project Director, a project funded through the U.S. Department of Education.
