Gladys Swanson

Gladys "Swanny" Swanson's Career Highlights

1931 Began her career at St. Scholastica as the Physical Education Director. Started instruction in tennis, basketball, hockey, and soccer amongst others.

1935

Started the first outdoor recreation programs, including hiking and bird watching.

1936

Joins Athletic Federation of College Women.

1937

Initiates the first ski class (Ski Photo).

1938

Develops a sod field (the first in Duluth) at the College.

1940

Develops a minor in Physical Education

1941

Bowling Alley opens on campus.

1946

"Swanny" elected Secretary of the MN Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation.

1953

Elected President of the Central Association for Physical Education of College Women.

1965

Health/Physical Education Major approved.

"Mrs. Swanson was a leader in the industry and a progressive force in the field of campus fitness and wellness programming. Thanks to her efforts, we have dynamic group fitness, intramural and Outdoor PURSUIT programs. THANKS SWANNY!"
