Mandy Hansen
Mandy Hansen graduated in May 2007 with a BA in both English and Communication. As a student she was highly involved in athletics on campus in nearly every aspect possible—she plays sports (soccer and track), takes classes involving them, and is the editor of the sports section in the Cable (a job she was hesitant about at first, but now finds a lot of fun).
It is no surprise that one of Mandy’s favorite classes was Sportswriting taught by John Baggs. She enjoyed it because it’s what she wants to do after she graduates and includes two of her favorite things—sports and writing. She also really liked Advertising with Julie Ahasay because she learned a lot from the class and she had the opportunity to job shadow at HT Klatsky through the class. Mass Media Law and Ethics taught by Ed Smith was another enjoyable class—a course that she said was hard, but very interesting.
Mandy’s internship as the sports information director’s assistant actually started out as a job. When she first started doing the job she was only doing data entry, but after a year she made the job into her internship. When Gregg Petcoff was hired as the College’s full time sports information director, she had the opportunity to expand her position. She began updating old things on the website, making game programs, working on game recaps for the website, and writing press releases for athletes’ hometown newspapers. She also works on media guides and post-game duties.
Mandy enjoyed having Julie as a professor because she brings the material in her classes to life and incorporates current events in what she teaches; her classes are so much fun that sometimes students don’t realize they are learning. Ed Smith is another professor that Mandy liked because it’s evident he is very knowledgeable about what he’s teaching. She also found his enthusiasm for the subjects he teaches contagious. Mandy also liked having Steve Erickson because she took her first Communication classes with him and he helped her realize she wanted to major in Communication. She also appreciated how knowledgeable he is about the subjects he teaches and how much real-life experience he brings with him to the classroom.
In the future, Mandy already has plans to get a Masters in Mass Communication and Journalism Studies from the University of Denver—hopefully with an emphasis in sports writing. After graduate school, who knows where the wind might blow her.
