Men's Baseball - vs. Concordia-Moorhead
EARLY LEAD PUSHES SAINTS TO SWEEP OF CONCORDIA
Just as in the first game of their doubleheader against the Cobbers from Concordia-Moorhead College, the Saints picked up two first inning runs from their initial two batters in the second game to open a lead they wouldn’t relinquish for a 6-3 victory on Saturday night in the Metrodome. Chad Weiss worked his first at-bat for a walk then stole second with Blake Eller at the plate. Eller’s bunt single moved Weiss over to third, and with second base open, Eller stole second to move into to scoring position with no outs. Steve Kraushaar brought Weiss in and moved Eller to third on a sacrifice fly to right, then Eller came home on a wild pitch to give the Saints a two-run lead. They scored two more in the second on only one hit to make the score 4-0. Darin Carlson walked then moved to second on a double-steal attempt that caught the inning’s lead-off batter Steve Gerten at third for the first out. Weiss’ single moved Carlson to third who then scored on an Eller groundout to the right of the first baseman. Weiss moved to third on the play and then stole home three pitches later for the second run of the inning. Those were all the runs the Saints would need as starter Mark Erickson and reliever Adian Kummet limited Concordia to three runs on six hits. Erickson (1-0) picked up the win with Kummet (1) earning the save. Over the final three innings, Kummet put the Cobbers down in order each time and retired five of the last nine batters on strikeouts. Eller had the only multi-hit game for the Saints with a single and triple. He had one stolen base, scored twice, and picked up two RBI in three at-bats. St. Scholastica (12-3) increased their current win streak to 10 games with the win. Concordia dropped to 2-10 with the loss.
