Women's Softball - vs. Gustavus Adolphus
BIG INNING SPURS GUSTIES TO SWEEP OF SAINTS
Though the Saints out hit Gustavus Adolphus 10 to nine on Sunday afternoon in the Irish Dome, they still dropped a 14-6 decision in the back end of a doubleheader to drop their season opening twin bill against the No. 14 Golden Gusties.
Starter Rilee Dawson allowed six earned runs through five innings for St. Scholastica (0-2) but it was a nine run fifth inning in which Gustavus (2-0) scored six unearned runs that did the Saints in.
Each team scored a run in the first but the Saints grabbed the lead in the bottom of the third behind a pair of walks sandwiched around a Katie Brown double and Erica Kozacek single that scored one run, then a failed suicide squeeze that resulted in Brown stealing home anyway for the second run in the inning.
Gustavus bounced back in the top half of the fourth inning to grab the lead on a two-run shot from Tina Strauss before the fateful fifth inning for the Saints.
The Saints chipped away with three runs in the bottom of the inning but were held scoreless over the final two innings.
Kozacek finished the day 3-for-4 at the plate for the Saints, scored one run and added an RBI. Dawson, Katelyn Wood, and Kris Peterson each picked up an RBI in the loss.
