MLA Citation for a Table in Statistical Abstracts

The original author will be located at the bottom of the table in the section titled "source." End with a period. Use this format for multiple authors - U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.


Title of the table
In quotations marks. Follow proper rules for capitalization, end with a period. - "Table no. 603. Unemployed Workers - Summary: 1980 to 2003."


Title of the statistical work
Underlined. Follow proper rules for capitalization. Include the year of publication as the subtitle, end with a period. - Statistical Abstract of the United States: 2004-2005.


Editor of the statistical work
The United States Census Bureau could be seen as editing (or compiling) this work - Start with Ed. followed by a period. - Ed. U.S. Census Bureau.


Place of publication & publisher
If the city is so well known that the name can stand alone, i.e. New York or Los Angeles, do not include the state. Use standard postal abbreviations for states if the city is not well known, i.e. Duluth, MN. Shorten publisher's name to most concise form (see p. 150-153 of the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. Separate place of publication from publisher with a colon. Place a comma after the publisher's name to separate it from the year of publication - Washington, D.C.: U.S. Census Bureau,


Year of publication
List the year of publication which appears on the title page or the title page verso (back side of title page). Separate from publisher with a comma. End the citation with a period - 2004.
