Women's Basketball - vs. UM-Duluth
BULLDOGS TOO MUCH FOR SAINTS
In the College Street match-up of the 2006-07 season between two teams only five minutes apart on the well-traveled road, the UMD Bulldogs took care of the visiting Saints 69-42 on Tuesday evening in Romano Gymnasium on the campus of UMD.
St. Scholastica opened the game by scoring the first six points to take the quick lead over the Division-II Bulldogs. The Division-III Saints managed to hold onto the lead until a UMD 3-pointer knotted things up at 12-12 with 7:54 to play in the opening half..
The Saints, down 12 at the intermission, climbed to within seven in the first four minutes of the second half but the Bulldogs would go on a 12-0 run to quiet the major upset hopes of David in Goliath's own arena.
Jessie Stenberg, Amanda Johnson, and Katie Cross would each grab seven rebounds apiece as the Saints out rebounded the taller Bulldog squad, 41 to 40. Cross led the Saints in scoring with eight points while Kim Huschle and Megan Downs each added seven.
Katie Winkelman from UMD scored a game-high 16 points, while three players tied for the UMD team lead in rebounds with seven apiece.
St. Scholastica (3-4, 0-1 UMAC) shot 38 percent from the field and held UMD (7-2, 0-0 NCC) to only 36 percent, but the Bulldogs' pressure defense netted 17 steals and caused 35 Saints turnovers that were just too many for an undedog squad with upset hopes.
The Saints won't travel far for their next game as they trek across the bridge for another local match-up on Saturday, Dec. 16 at UW-Superior. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
