SAINTS OPEN UMAC SCHEDULE WITH OT LOSS
The Saints led by three at the half and by as many as nine five minutes into the second half, but the visiting LumberJills from Northland College fought back to knot things up at the end of regulation, then outscored St. Scholastica 9 to 4 in the overtime period to take the UMAC opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at the Reif Center in Duluth.
The Saints shot 38 percent from the field in the game and held the 'Jills to only 34 percent, and out rebounded the visitors 40 to 38 but had 29 turnovers and only eight assists in the entire game.
The 'Jills did their damage both inside and out as they outscored the Saints 28 to 12 from the paint and made five 3-pointers to the Saints' two.
A trio of Saints scored in double figures led by Megan Downs' 12 points. Heather Saralampi had 11 in the game and Jessie Stenberg added 10 while also leading the Saints in rebounding with five in the loss.
Evelyn Hoosier led the 'Jills with 16 points and four rebounds.
St. Scholastica (3-3, 0-1 UMAC) and Northland (2-5, 1-0) both have a long break before their next conference games as each team will attend holiday tournaments in the end of December before embarking on the rest of their UMAC slate on January 12, 2007.
