SAINTS FORGE WAY INTO CHAMPIONSHIP MATCH
In defeating Bethany Lutheran for the second time in as many meetings, number three-seeded St. Scholastica advanced to the UMAC Championship match.
With the 3-1 victory, the Saints earned a championship appearance for the first time since 2003 when they fell to Northwestern College 3-0.
After taking the first two games against Bethany 30-22 and 30-20, St. Scholastica fell to the Vikings in the third game 30-23. They rebounded in the fourth game to win 33-31, propelling them to a meeting with UMAC regular season champion Martin Luther College in the conference final.
Against the Vikings, the Saints’ top three kills leaders again led the team in attacking. Amy Thompson had 18 kills and Shawna Varichak registered 14 while LeAnn Berscheit added 12.
St. Scholastica’s set assist-leader Kati Berscheit had 47 set assists in the win.
Leading the team in digs was junior captain Diana Moody with 14. Thompson also added 11 digs.
For Bethany Lutheran, Leslie Bremer led the team with 27 kills, Joelle Shouts registered 46 set assists and Nicki Flygar had 24 digs.
The Saints climbed to 20-14 overall while the Vikings ended their season with an overall mark of 11-20.
