Nathan Carroll

Nathan Carroll

Political Science, a MA in Philosophy (Aesthetics) from the University of York in England, and recently received a PhD in May 2006 from Indiana University Bloomington. He also did graduate work at the University of Amsterdam in Philosophy and Cultural Analysis.

Nathan's area of expertise is film studies, especially in relation to American culture. He did his dissertation on how new media digital archiving practices (ex: DVDs) are disrupting the ways in which we encounter and remember film history. Currently he is developing various projects, including a book version of his dissertation, a project looking at the relationship between film directors and opera, and a project related to Robert Altman's television work.

There are certainly a number of interesting jobs that Nathan has worked on his procession through school which include movie theatre usher, tire stacker, furniture mover, bar bouncer, pizza maker, casino change-maker, and he even cleaned iguana cages in exchange for sandwiches while he was in Europe, because the bank lost his money for a few months.

Nathan loves his work so it's no surprise that one of his favorite pastimes is watching and collecting movies. He and his wife, Nichole, have lived all over the U.S. and Europe and both enjoy traveling to visit family and friends. Nathan also enjoys writing and has published articles in film journals such as The Velvet Light Trap and The Moving Image.

Nathan's wife, Nichole Sterling, is finishing her PhD in Scandinavian and Medieval Studies at UC Berkeley and is currently writing her dissertation and doing adjunct faculty work at CSS, UMD, and UW-S. She is also the regional coordinator placing foreign exchange students with local families.
