Whatever their professional goals, students need to become "internationally literate" in these fast-changing times. They need to have more than a passing understanding of the way things are beyond America's borders.
The Languages and International Studies (LIS) department at The College of St. Scholastica provides opportunities to cross linguistic, cultural and socio-political boundaries to prepare for today's complex and dynamic world. We offer a broad range of courses encouraging students to examine the relationships between national and international events. These courses focus on global realities and responsibilities.
LIS programs offer the opportunity to develop fluency in at least one world language and to gain some understanding of the historical political and cultural influences that shape the speakers of that language. Other courses deal with topics that are truly international in scope: human rights, peacekeeping, environmental politics, globalization and cross-cultural issues, to name a few.
