If you learn German in order to buy sausages in Frankfurt, you'll never know Goethe. But if you know Goethe in depth, you'll always know enough German to buy those sausages (from "Mourir à Francfort" by Hubert Monteilhet).
Why study another language? Because learning another language (or two) is part of receiving a well-rounded education. It's an essential tool for gaining access to the world beyond your own experiences. A second (or third) language will open new doors for you, lead you along a path of new ways of thinking. You'll be exposed to different traditions and likely be dazzled with the richness of other cultures - their music, their cuisine, their humor and their writers and philosophers.
If that is not enough for you, there are more practical reasons. Knowledge of a second language can help you get a job when competition is tough. If you are interested in international business or law, languages are a must. Musicians need languages and so do scientists, since information on research and new discoveries is not always in English. When you speak another language, you become a member of a larger community, the world is more welcoming, and you grow. St. Scholastica offers minors in French, Spanish, Russian, German and courses in Ojibwe.
MinorsA minor in one of the world languages offered at St. Scholastica is an excellent complement to any major - and all it requires is 20 credits.
French and SpanishThe French and Spanish sections of the Languages and International Studies Department at St. Scholastica have devised a creative Total Language Curriculum program which, with the help of videos, computer programs, tapes and workbooks, enables students to learn at their own pace and become acquainted with the foreign culture as well as the foreign languages. Students take 3-credit clusters: 2 credits of language and culture and a 1-credit lab section on related activities, such as pronunciation, vocabulary, or reading.
Some of our offerings are:

GermanThe German section of the Languages and Literature Department offers a compact two-year Beginning and Intermediate sequence which can be enlarged into a minor by adding supplementary courses in History or the International Management sequence in addition to a summer abroad study experience at the Goethe Institute (or other approved program). Students with a high school background in German could thus easily add a German minor to enhance their career program plans.
OjibweOjibwe language courses are open to all students who are interested in the Ojibwe language and way of life. Courses stress the culture, traditions and beliefs of the Ojibwe people so that students learn both the language's meaning and its origin.
RussianThe College of St. Scholastica has established close ties with the Karelian State Pedagogical University in Petrozavodsk, Duluth's sister city in Russia. As a result, we offer a number of opportunities to have direct contact with Russians and with the Russian language both in Duluth and in Petrozavodsk. The sister college relationship allows for St. Scholastica students and faculty to study and teach in Russia and for Russians to enjoy extended stays on campus in Duluth. St. Scholastica currently offers a three-year Russian language program in Duluth in combination with a summer Russian language camp experience in Russia.
