Women's Soccer - vs. Northland College
SAINTS OVERPOWER LUMBERJILLS
At halftime of St. Scholastica's game at Northland College on Tuesday afternoon, the Saints owned a 23 to one lead in shots, yet the teams went into the break knotted at zeroes.
It wasn't until Shannon Kresky scored in the 51st minute off a feed from Kristen Stangel that the Saints were able to get something up on the scoreboard.
If possible, the Saints were even more dominating in the second half of their 3-0 victory in Ashland, Wisconsin, as they took an amazing 32 shots while holding the host Lumberjills shot-less.
St. Scholastica came out on fire after the half as they had already registered three shots in the six minutes before Kresky's goal.
Over the next 15 minutes the Saints peppered the Northland goal with nine shots, including one from Angie Groh that hit the crossbar, finally getting another past Lumberjills keeper Brittany Ballwanz in the 68th minute as Kresky fed Groh for her fourth goal of the season.
Less than a minute later, and on the next shot of the game, Robin Johnson scored for the Saints to up the lead to three as she picked up her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Though the scoring was over for the game, the excitement in front of the Northland net wasn't as St. Scholastica continued their assault with 16 shots over the final 18 minutes. Five were saved by Ballwanz, one from Stangel hit the crossbar, and the others were either blocked by a packed in defense or sailed high or wide.
Saints keeper Kelly Momsen had an unexciting second half after making a save on the only Lumberjills shot of the game which came in the first half. Ballwanz picked up 22 saves on her busy afternoon in the Northland net.
The Saints (8-1-1 overall, 5-0-0 UMAC) won their sixth in a row, a span in which they've outscored opponents 19 to two. The Lumberjills fell to 2-7-0 and 2-3-0.
