SAINTS OPEN BORDER BATTLE WITH WIN OVER NORTH CENTRAL
St. Scholastica swept through their opening match of the CSS/UWS Border battle Friday afternoon with a 3-0 victory over North Central University at Mertz Morterelli Gym on UW-Superior’s campus.
The Saints took a see-saw first game 31-29, then won the next two games with a little more breathing room, 30-20 and 30-24.
For the sixth consecutive match, Shawna Varichak reached double-figures in kills for the Saints, registering a match-leading 17 in the sweep of the Rams.
Katie Berscheit added 46 set assists in the match, picking up 100 percent of the assist opportunites.
LeAnn Berscheit, Katie’s older sister, had 10 kills, four service aces and four digs for St. Scholastica while teammate Diana Moody – the UMAC conference’s defensive specialist of the week – picked up 32 digs, her fifth match this season with at least 30 digs.
The win, their fourth consecutive, pushes the Saints record to 4-6.
