Engineering is the profession in which the sciences are applied toward the modification of the physical world and the human environment. Designing large-scale chemical manufacturing processes is the job of chemical engineers. Electrical circuits are designed by electrical engineers. A civil engineer designs roads and bridges. Mining engineers decide how to get metal ores out of the ground. If you are interested in how things work or how to make things work, engineering should appeal to you.

Career Opportunities

National efforts to deal with energy demands, environmental problems and industrial health and safety hazards have created many new engineering opportunities. Engineering firms, government agencies, health service organiza-tions, and industries are all actively recruiting qualified engineers - female and male. There are positions in research, development production, design, construction, administration, management, systems analysis and computer applications. The demand for engineers is well documented in terms of salaries employers currently offer. Starting salaries for engineering graduates have been generally higher than the average starting salaries in other fields.

Special High School Preparation

High school students considering an engineering major in college should plan to take all of the high school physical science (chemistry, physics) available, and as much high school math as possible (at least advanced algebra and trigonometry). Computer courses, calculus or pre-calculus math are desirable. Three years of a foreign language in high school will satisfy the St. Scholastica foreign language requirement; this is also recommended.

Pre-Engineering Sequence

St. Scholastica has no engineering program, but can provide science and mathematics courses, which will lay a foundation for students who wish to transfer into an engineering program elsewhere after the sophomore year. It is essential that students be aware that each engineering school has its own unique set of requirements. Each prospective pre-engineering student should write to his/her preferred engineering school for a catalog, preferably before beginning the first year at St. Scholastica. Students should be aware not only of the science and math requirements of their engineering school, but general education requirements as well.

All engineering students should take CHM 1110, 1120, PSC 2001, 2002, and MTH 2221, 2222, 3321, 3323. In addition, students who wish to transfer into a chemical engineering or materials engineering program should take CHM 2210 and 2220.

Applying to Engineering School

Application for admission to the engineering school should be made early in the sophomore year at St. Scholastica. Most programs have many applicants and fill quickly. Some students may choose to spend a third year at St. Scho-lastica, realizing that this will extend their time in college to a minimum of five years.
