Women's Volleyball - vs. Concordia-Moorhead
COBBERS MAKE QUICK WORK OF SAINTS
The opening match of St. Scholastica’s 2006 volleyball season certainly didn’t come off the way head coach Dana Moore hoped it would as the Saints fell to Concordia College 3-0 in the first match of the Concordia Invite in Moorhead, Minnesota on Friday afternoon.
The Cobbers swept all three games by identical 30-15 scores.
St. Scholastica registered only 22 kills in the three-game match compared with 42 by Concordia. Sophomore Shawna Varichak led the Saints with seven kills while Michelle Honek led the Cobbers with 14.
Saints sophomore Katie Berscheit stepped into the setters role this year after playing only 35 of 114 games in 2005 and picked up 15 assists in the match.
Neither team was exceptionally strong at the net defensively as Concordia had only seven blocks while the Saints picked up only two.
What really hurt the Saints were the 13 service aces Concordia registered.
St. Scholastica will try to bounce back in a later game on Friday against Valley City (N.D.) State, then against Mayville (N.D.) State and Bemidji State on Saturday afternoon.
