Saints pound Cougars for series sweep

St. Scholastica pounded out 26 hits over two games to sweep today’s doubleheader against UM-Morris at Wade Stadium today, winning game one 11-0 followed by a 17-2 route in the nightcap.

The No. 5 Saints (34-3) finish the conference portion of their schedule with a perfect 21-0 record and enter the May 11-12 UMAC Tournament at Wade Stadium as the top seed.

Freshman starter Jake Gaub picked up his second win of the year in game one after not allowing a run in 4 innings on the mound for the Saints. Gaub (2-0) scattered 4 hits with 2 walks and 3 strikeouts and has yet to be scored on in 14 innings this year. Junior Mark Erickson pitched the final 3 innings without allowing a hit or baserunner.

Five Saints had 2 hits in the shutout win including junior Keith Ritsche who led the team with 3 RBI and lead-off batter Chad Weiss who scored 4 runs.

Game two starter freshman Jake Wendland (3-0) went four innings and only allowed 2 runs on 5 hits. Junior Eric Hagen and freshman Ben Sartori finished off the final 3 innings without allowing a run to the Cougars.

St. Scholastica sent 14 batters to the plate in a 9-run second inning that broke the game open. Right fielder Jake Gaub had two hits in the inning, scored once and picked up 3 RBI with a second at-bat double that cleared the bases.

Gaub, junior Brandon Swartz, and freshman Kyle Wojtysiak each finished with 2 hits in the blow out. Junior second baseman Kyle Rizzi picked up 3 RBI to match Gaub, and three other Saints added 2 RBI apiece.

The Saints have equaled their previous season-best win streak with their 14th win in a row today. They have swept 10 doubleheaders this season and even swept a tripleheader in late March.

The regular season will finish tomorrow with a home game against No. 28 St. Thomas at 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon in Wade Stadium where the Saints have won 36 of their last 39 home games.
